Contrada di Sorano (Piedmont, Serralunga d’Alba) DOCG Barolo and DOCG Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo

CRISTINA AND PAOLO BAUDANA

Winemaking activities in the Langhe, especially the heralded appellations like Barolo and Barbaresco, are dominated by multi-generational families, often with an elderly grandfather still at the helm, or at least with his thumb on everything that happens. It is unusual to hear of new projects here but somehow we heard about a young couple that started a new winery in the frazione of Sorano, a commune of the charming village of Serralunga d'Alba. While, they agreed to see us, they warned that they made very little wine, and didn't speak any English.

It turns out, the language barrier isn’t a problem. Some people wear perma-smiles. Paolo and Cristina Baudana have them. They are young, happy, energetic, and cool. And they are following the kind of farming dream that gives us great hope for the future of small production winemaking. As for the wines, their quality does the talking
